The winding hills are adorned with houses of all colors. The flowing sea currents seep into the clear, blue sky. Time in this small town slows down, very slow. It feels like a dream, yet so vivid.
Positano
The most beautiful fairy-tale town on the cliff
Positano is a small town on the Amalfi Coast in the Campania region of Italy, with most of the town facing the sea. It is the most picturesque town along the Amalfi Coast, once a paradise for the wealthy, and a filming location for many romantic movies.
Scene from “Under the Tuscan Sun”
Nobel Prize laureate John Steinbeck, after visiting, wrote in his travelogue:
“Positano is a dreamland; it’s not very real when you’re there, but when you leave, it becomes vividly alive, and it does not disturb your thoughts when inspiration strikes. Those houses cling to such steep cliffs; they are the cliffs themselves, just with steps carved into them!”
This travelogue, titled “Positano Bites Deeply,” brought Positano to the world’s attention.
The Sea
In summer, the beach is dotted with colorful parasols and beach chairs, creating a vibrant scene. The light blue sea washes against the shore, with white sails dotting the surface.
During the off-season, the vast beach becomes a private paradise for the few tourists, where one can bask in the sun, experiencing the laid-back, lazy lifestyle of the Italians.
The Sights
Positano’s most famous landmark is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
The dome of the cathedral is made of ceramics, and the classic interior outlines are broken by columns topped with gilded Ionic capitals. Winged angels peer down from each archway. The main altar features a 13th-century Byzantine-style “Black Madonna and Child.”
The Path of the Gods is a hiking trail around Positano, where you can walk and enjoy the scenery, culminating in a view overlooking the entire town from above, with its layers of glazed tile roofs, flowers, and lush greenery, as if in paradise. The whole journey takes about 4 hours.
The Roads
If there’s one way to truly feel the beauty of Positano, it’s to slow down your usual hurried pace, stop and go, climb the slopes when you see them, and descend the stairs when you find them.
Positano, perched on a cliff by the sea, has roads that are super narrow one-way streets where cars cannot turn around. So, once you see the sign for Positano, you’re destined to find that two legs are more convenient and faster than four wheels, with even the gentle breeze of early autumn pushing you to keep walking.
The Night
After seeing the blue skies, white clouds, and golden Positano, one must not miss the moment when the sun meets the blue sea, the moon rises high, and each household lights up their homes.
When the lights from the houses decorate the town like a small palace, from a distance, it looks like stars in the sky or fireflies resting in the grass, mysterious and beautiful.
