Beyond Hokkaido: Discovering China’s Winter Wonderland

If you think Hokkaido is the peak of winter beauty, prepare to be amazed by Northeast China. This land, kissed by ice and snow, has a unique blend of ruggedness and delicacy.

It’s not a beauty you see at a glance, but rather one hidden in its mountains, forests, lakes, and fields. It is the endless journey of the Snowpiercer, the frozen landscapes of White Deer Plain, and the “snow-laden branches” described by author Zhang Xiaofeng – a place of serene purity.

Here, falling snowflakes transform the land into a silver tapestry. But, beyond the scenery, Northeast China is also a sanctuary for rare wildlife.

The Tale of the Amur Tiger

Historically, the Amur tiger roamed widely in Northeast China. But after the fall of the Qing Dynasty, massive migration led to deforestation and habitat loss. Hunting also decimated the tiger population, pushing it to the brink of extinction. The Amur leopard also faced extinction.

By the late 20th century, only a few Amur tigers and leopards remained in China. According to a joint survey, there were fewer than 20 Amur tigers and only 7-12 Amur leopards in China.

To restore the ecosystem, scientists established the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park. Thanks to these efforts, the park’s tiger and leopard populations have increased from 27 and 42 in 2017 to approximately 70 and 80 in 2022.

It’s a biodiversity hotspot with a complete food chain from herbivores to predators, with protected plants and animals, like the Amur tiger, Amur leopard, brown bear, black bear, lynx, and Eurasian otter.

Migratory Bird Watching

The park is also a critical area for migratory birds. The Tumen River Estuary Wetlands, a key bird area in Asia, attracts large numbers of migrating birds. Here, you can spot a variety of species, contributing to the ecological balance of the region.

Winter Fishing: An Ancient Tradition

Winter fishing, an age-old practice, continues in places like Chagan Lake, Xingkai Lake, and Jingpo Lake. This method is more traditional than commercial fishing. Fishermen drill holes in the ice, place their nets, and wait. This is a good way to experience the cold of nature and appreciate ancient fishing practices.

Lake Jingpo: A Volcanic Wonder

Lake Jingpo is a volcanic crater lake formed thousands of years ago when lava flow blocked the ancient riverbed of the Mudan River. The lake is a long, winding stretch of water, about 45 kilometers long. The Diaoshuilou Waterfall, where water plunges from a lava cave, is especially impressive. In winter, the waterfall freezes, creating a stunning ice spectacle.
