A Shocking Medical Case: A Plastic Bottle Found Inside the Rectum

An Unusual Discovery in India

Where would you normally expect to see a one-liter plastic bottle? Most people would say on a supermarket shelf, a dining table, or perhaps in a trash bin.

However, doctors in Agra, a city in Uttar Pradesh, India, recently discovered something far more unusual. In this case, such a bottle was found inside a man’s rectum.

A Patient in Severe Pain

Not long ago, a 38-year-old man, referred to as A, was taken to a private hospital in Agra. He had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for 36 hours. The discomfort had become unbearable.

Doctors began with routine questions. They asked about food poisoning, diarrhea, and other common causes. The patient denied all of them.

With no clear answers, doctors ordered an X-ray. The result revealed a shocking truth.

A Startling Diagnosis

The scan showed a large object lodged in the lower abdomen, specifically in the rectum.

At first, doctors could hardly believe what they saw. After careful examination and repeated confirmation, they identified the object. It was a one-liter plastic bottle.

Given its size, the source of the patient’s intense pain became obvious.

Emergency Surgery

The situation was urgent. Doctors had no time to investigate how the bottle got there. Their priority was to remove it safely.

A team of surgeons was assembled. After discussion, they decided on the best surgical approach.

The operation lasted one hour and ten minutes. In the end, the doctors successfully removed the bottle.

A Difficult Procedure

According to the lead surgeon, the case was particularly challenging. The bottle was large, and removing it without damaging the intestines required great care.

Fortunately, the surgery went smoothly. No major complications occurred.

After the operation, the patient remained in the hospital for observation. Over the next four days, doctors conducted multiple examinations, including checks of the sigmoid colon.

They confirmed there were no signs of infection. Once the patient was able to pass stool normally, he was discharged.

The Mystery Behind the Incident

As for how the bottle ended up inside the rectum, the patient did not provide a clear explanation. Doctors could only speculate.

They mentioned a condition sometimes referred to as anal eroticism. This involves individuals inserting objects into the body for unusual forms of stimulation.

While this specific case was rare, doctors noted that similar incidents are not uncommon.

Not an Isolated Case

Medical professionals in India have encountered many such cases over the years.

In July 2024, a 60-year-old farmer in Madhya Pradesh inserted a 40-centimeter-long bottle gourd into his rectum. He sought help only after the pain became unbearable. Doctors took two hours to remove it.

Surprisingly, such cases are not new. Historical records of similar incidents date back to the 16th century.

In 2022, also in Uttar Pradesh, a 22-year-old college student inserted a deodorant bottle. It remained stuck for three hours before medical intervention was required.

In April 2020, a 50-year-old man in Maharashtra inserted a 400-milliliter plastic bottle while intoxicated. He later required emergency surgery.

Although smaller than a one-liter bottle, the situation was still life-threatening.

A Clear Warning from Doctors

With such cases appearing repeatedly, colorectal specialists around the world face ongoing challenges.

Their advice, however, remains simple and consistent.

The rectum has one primary function, which is excretion. It is not meant for any other use.
