Three Fathers, One Pregnancy: A Family That Redefines Parenthood

Three Fathers, One Pregnancy: A Family That Redefines Parenthood

Transgender pregnancy story of a man who carried a child for his partners, forming a unique three father family. It is quite common for children to compare their families with others. However, one baby from Finland seems to have a rather unique “advantage” — she has more fathers than most.

In typical families, a child has one father. Some may have two in blended or same sex households. But this little girl has three fathers. To understand how this happened, we need to begin with Kris, one of her fathers, who also carried and gave birth to her.

A Childhood Dream That Challenged Norms

Kris is originally from Norway. He was assigned female at birth, but from a very young age, he had a clear dream. He wanted to grow up and become a father.

In a way, his body gave him a unique possibility. Because he had a uterus, he could theoretically experience pregnancy without relying on a partner to carry the child. All he needed was a sperm donor.

However, Norwegian law created a major obstacle. To legally transition to male, Kris was required to undergo procedures related to gender-affirming surgery. These included removing reproductive organs such as the ovaries and uterus, as well as chest reconstruction.

This directly conflicted with his lifelong dream. Without those organs, he would never be able to carry a child.

A Difficult Compromise

Kris argued with doctors many times. Still, the law left him with little room to negotiate.

Before entering surgery, he reportedly pleaded with medical staff, saying he did not want to go through with it. In the end, a compromise was reached. His ovaries were removed, but his uterus was preserved.

Even so, the experience left a deep emotional impact. After the procedure, Kris said he felt as if something essential had been taken from him.

Later, he filed a lawsuit. He claimed he had been forced into a procedure against his will and had suffered lasting consequences. Doctors also informed him that hormone treatments involving testosterone might have affected his fertility.

The court eventually ruled against him, stating that the treatment followed standard medical practice.

An Unconventional Relationship

Years later, Kris began a new chapter in life. At a university party, he met David and Sindre.

David, a university professor, described their connection as something special. The three quickly developed a strong bond and decided to build a relationship together.

Their dynamic often confused others. Some of David’s colleagues knew Kris, while others knew Sindre. A few even assumed they were the same person.

At one point, David had to clarify to a colleague that he actually had two partners, not one.

A Second Chance at Parenthood

About ten years after the surgery, something unexpected happened. Doctors discovered that Kris’s uterus was still healthy. Although hormone therapy had affected it, his fertility had not been completely lost.

The news brought immense joy to the trio. They finally had a chance to have a child together.

However, new challenges appeared. Kris had not frozen his eggs earlier. They needed an egg donor. Under Norwegian law, men cannot access egg donation services, which meant Kris was not eligible.

A Journey to Finland

To overcome legal barriers, the three decided to travel to Finland. Compared to Norway, Finland has more flexible policies regarding assisted reproduction. Under Finnish law, children can access information about their donor once they turn eighteen.

This transparency aligned with their values. They wanted to raise their child with honesty from the very beginning.

After significant financial investment, they proceeded with in vitro fertilisation. An egg from a donor was fertilized with sperm from one of the partners. The embryo was then implanted into Kris’s uterus.

Experiencing Pregnancy

Kris finally experienced pregnancy. It was both joyful and physically demanding.

His body underwent major changes due to estrogen and progesterone. He described the experience as painful at times, yet deeply meaningful.

He also shared conflicting feelings. The pregnancy made him feel more connected to traditionally female experiences. At the same time, it strengthened his identity as a man.

He noticed physical changes such as the loss of facial hair and body hair. His chest began to develop again. While he disliked some of these changes, he said he loved his growing belly.

Support and Responsibility

David and Sindre praised Kris for his dedication. They said he handled the pregnancy with great responsibility and rarely complained.

In fact, they often had to remind him not to push himself too hard.

Together, the three hoped to become caring and capable fathers.

Concerns About the Future

Despite their happiness, Kris also had concerns. He worried that their unusual family structure might confuse their child.

He imagined questions like why their family was different from others. He also feared that the child might feel ashamed.

Still, he hoped that honesty and love would guide them through those challenges.

A New Life and Ongoing Journey

In 2023, Kris gave birth to their daughter.

Not long after, he attempted another round of IVF treatment. Unfortunately, the pregnancy ended in miscarriage.

Their story later caught public attention. The BBC produced a documentary about their lives. The goal was to encourage discussion about what defines a family.

At the end of the program, Kris shared another piece of news. He revealed that he was pregnant again.

Their journey continues, filled with uncertainty but also hope. In the end, their story reminds us that families can take many forms, yet love and responsibility remain at the center of them all.
