A joint declaration by Pacific leaders was reissued Saturday morning with mentions of Taiwan eliminated after China slammed an earlier model as a “mistake” that “should be corrected.”
After 5 days of talks in Tonga, a “cleared” communique was launched Friday that reaffirmed a 30-year-old settlement permitting Taiwan to participate within the Pacific Islands Discussion board.
However the wording instantly raised the ire of Chinese language diplomats, who piled strain on Pacific leaders to amend the doc.
