Following is UN Secretary-Normal António Guterres’ message for Human Rights Day, noticed on 10 December:
On Human Rights Day, we face a harsh reality. Human rights are underneath assault. Tens of thousands and thousands of persons are mired in poverty, starvation, poor well being and training programs that haven’t but absolutely recovered from the COVID‑19 pandemic. World inequalities are operating rampant. Conflicts are intensifying. Worldwide regulation is wilfully ignored. Authoritarianism is on the march whereas civic house is shrinking. Hateful rhetoric is fuelling discrimination, division and outright violence. And ladies’s rights proceed to be rolled again in regulation and apply.
This 12 months’s theme reminds us that human rights are about constructing the longer term — proper now. All human rights are indivisible. Whether or not financial, social, civic, cultural or political, when one proper is undermined, all rights are undermined.
We should arise for all rights — all the time. Therapeutic divisions and constructing peace. Tackling the scourges of poverty and starvation. Guaranteeing healthcare and training for all. Advancing justice and equality for girls, women and minorities. Standing up for democracy, press freedoms and employees’ rights. Selling the precise to a protected, clear, wholesome and sustainable surroundings. And defending human rights defenders as they perform their very important work.
The just lately adopted Pact for the Future bolstered the world’s dedication to the Common Declaration of Human Rights.
On this necessary day, let’s shield, defend and uphold all human rights for all individuals.
