Set up artist Lee Sung-kuen’s solo exhibition “The Circle of Life” at Artcube 2R2 in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul encompasses the artist’s 70-year profession that has advanced across the act of steady binding and tying.
The exhibition that kicked off on Aug. 29 options the artist’s iconic installations created with oil-tempered metal wire, extensively used for springs, wrapped in hanji, conventional Korean mulberry paper.
The wire is woven right into a mesh in spherical shapes harking back to cocoons or clouds, the connecting knots and the wires between them showing like dots and features.

“Hanji, which is incomparably smooth but possesses long-lasting vitality, connects to the continuity and existence of life. The rounded items, composed of small knots and features wrapped in hanji, create an area that feels as serene as a mom’s embrace,” the artist stated of his work.
A Hongik College graduate, Lee has exhibited in Milan, Paris, New York since 1998. A solo exhibition entitled “Human, Love, Mild” was held in 2020 at Buk-Seoul Museum of Artwork.
Artcube 2R2, a gallery newly launched by ArtToken, an internet non-fungible token artwork buying and selling platform, is open Tuesday-Saturday. The exhibition will run by way of Oct. 16.
