TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police arrested a 65-year-old American vacationer for allegedly defacing a torii gate of Meiji Shrine in Shibuya Ward earlier this week.
On Tuesday morning, Steven Lee Hayes allegedly carved his household’s names onto the wooden gate along with his fingernails. Police imagine it was carried out as a prank, stories NHK (Nov. 14).
Upon his arrest, Hayes admitted to the allegations, police stated.
In accordance with police, 5 letters, every round 135 centimeters tall, had been carved into the pillar. They’re believed to signify the names of the suspect’s household.
After the incident, a consultant of the shrine seen the vandalism and referred to as police.
Hayes surfaced as an individual of curiosity after an examination of safety digicam footage.
The suspect is in Japan on a trip journey along with his household. The investigation is ongoing.
