U.S. president-elect Donald Trump has nominated former diplomat and congressman Pete Hoekstra to be the U.S. ambassador to Canada.
“Pete is well-respected within the Nice State of Michigan – A State we received sizably,” Trump posted on his social media platform, Fact Social on Wednesday.
In his publish, Trump known as the “disastrous” NAFTA settlement “the worst Commerce Deal within the Historical past of america,” saying that he proudly overhauled it with the United States-Mexico-Canada Settlement (USMCA) Settlement.
He added that in his first presidency, his administration “introduced commerce with Mexico and Canada to a stage enjoying discipline for our great Farmers and Working Households.”
Hoekstra thanked the president-elect in a publish on X.

Hoekstra served because the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands from 2018 to 2021 and was previously the U.S. consultant for Michigan’s 2nd congressional district from 1993 to 2011.
