Regardless of the autumn harvest, the value of rice in North Korean markets is skyrocketing. A kilogram now prices over 7,000 North Korean received in Hyesan, Ryanggang province – a brand new report. This surge in meals costs signifies North Koreans are struggling because the economic system worsens.
Every day NK’s newest market survey exhibits rice costs climbing throughout main cities. In Pyongyang, a kilo offered for six,530 received on Oct. 13, up 2% from two weeks prior. Sinuiju noticed comparable ranges, with rice at 6,580 received per kilo, a 1.5% enhance.
Hyesan had the best costs, exceeding 7,000 received – ranges not seen since a COVID-19 lockdown in June 2021. The common value throughout Pyongyang, Sinuiju and Hyesan hit 6,703 received, the best since Every day NK started monitoring in 2009.
Corn costs remained comparatively secure, with some regional variations. In Pyongyang, corn rose barely to three,100 received per kilo. Nevertheless, costs dipped in Sinuiju and Hyesan to three,120 and three,200 received respectively. Regardless of small decreases, corn nonetheless prices over 3,000 received in these cities.
Not like earlier years, the autumn corn harvest hasn’t notably lowered costs. In comparison with final October, rice costs are up 33.1% and corn up 17%.
A North Hamgyong supply instructed Every day NK that households are reducing rice consumption and consuming extra “corn porridge” made with wilted greens: “I assumed meals would enhance in fall, however rice is uncommon now.
