Like melting sea ice and glaciers, the frozen sheets that cowl lakes are vanishing, too. Lake ice loss has accelerated over the previous 25 years, with lakes within the northern hemisphere melting a mean of 45 days sooner than they did a century in the past.
“The lack of ice in freshwater techniques has penalties which are social, environmental and financial,” says Stephanie Hampton of the Carnegie Establishment for Science in Washington DC.
