A courtroom on Friday sentenced opposition chief Lee Jae-myung to a suspended one-year jail time period for mendacity through the earlier presidential marketing campaign when he was a candidate, a ruling that if upheld will strip him of his parliamentary seat and bar him from operating within the subsequent presidential election in 2027.
The Seoul Central District Courtroom delivered the ruling, saying Lee, the chief of the primary opposition Democratic Celebration, is responsible of creating false statements in violation of the Public Official Election Act.
Lee is accused of mendacity throughout a media interview in December 2021 that he didn’t know the late Kim Moon-ki, a former government of Seongnam Improvement Corp., which was behind a corruption-ridden improvement venture in Seongnam, south of Seoul, when Lee was town’s mayor.
Lee can be accused of mendacity throughout a parliamentary audit of the Gyeonggi provincial authorities in October 2021 that he was beneath stress from the land ministry to rezone the previous web site of the Korea Meals Analysis Institute in Seongnam. The positioning was later developed into condominium complexes by a personal developer, and allegations have been raised that Lee rezoned the land to provide preferential remedy to the corporate.
