The NFL fined New Orleans Saints defensive deal with Nathan Shepherd $11,817 on Saturday for committing pointless roughness in opposition to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Chargers gamers accused Shepherd of deliberately attempting to injure quarterback Justin Herbert on a play in Los Angeles’ 26-8 win this previous Sunday.
Shepherd and Chargers middle Bradley Bozeman had been each flagged for pointless roughness after Shepherd appeared to twist Herbert’s proper ankle after he had already taken Herbert to the bottom. Bozeman jumped on prime of Shepherd and shoved him away from Herbert.
Bozeman was not fined for the play.
On Monday, Saints coach Dennis Allen defended Shepherd in opposition to the Chargers’ accusations.
“This is a man that is attempting to wrap the quarterback up. He is on the bottom, he has no thought whether or not the quarterback has the ball or not. He is simply attempting to deliver the quarterback all the way down to the bottom,” Allen mentioned. “There was nothing malicious about that play. It is a man that is attempting to make the play. I went again and checked out that play once more after seeing the feedback and I do not agree with that.”
Bozeman advised reporters Sunday that he was attempting to guard Herbert, who sprained his proper ankle in Week 2 this season. He was given a recreation ball by Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh.
“He’ll give all the pieces for this crew, and I appreciated what he did,” Herbert mentioned after the sport. “I attempted to tug him off so he did not get any penalties referred to as, however to have a man like that defending you, there is not any higher feeling.”
Shepherd and the Saints (2-6) will try to finish a six-game dropping streak once they face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Working again Jamaal Williams was downgraded from uncertain to out and didn’t journey with the crew, and huge receiver Bub Means and working again Kendre Miller had been placed on injured reserve Saturday. That is the second stint on IR for Miller this season.
