A large tomato spill protecting the Tohoku Expressway led to a short lived highway closure on the morning of August 28. The spill, estimated at round 13 tons, turned the freeway shiny purple.
Eyewitnesses reported that the tomatoes have been scattered over a distance of 40 to 50 meters. The spill probably occurred when a automobile didn’t decelerate on a curve, inflicting its load to shift and the tomatoes to spill out.
In consequence, the Tohoku Expressway was closed between the Anshiro Interchange and the Kazuno Hachimantai Interchange, however the highway was reopened by midday. Happily, no accidents have been reported.
