In Europe, there’s a country even more captivating than Austria, a prime destination for vacations, and that is Slovenia – a fairytale world that must be visited before the age of 60. It is a hidden gem nestled in Europe. Embraced by the Alps and lying serenely in the arms of the Adriatic Sea, Slovenia holds countless delightful surprises.

Slovenia boasts not only stunning natural landscapes but also vibrant cities that offer unique travel experiences. From the architectural artistry of the capital city, Ljubljana, to the ancient Roman ruins of Ptuj, and the Lake Bled nestled in the Julian Alps, every city offers a distinct story to explore, whether by cycling, hiking, or traditional wooden rafts.

Lake Bled
Nestled in the Julian Alps, Lake Bled is like a shimmering sapphire. The best time to visit is during the summer when the lake is warm enough for swimming. The iconic Church of the Assumption on the island in the center of the lake is said to grant wishes if you ring the bell three times. A must-do is to take a traditional pletna boat to the island while listening to local legends from the oarsmen. At dusk, savor a slice of the local cream cake by the lake while enjoying the sunset views, for a perfect ending to the day.

Piran Town
This medieval town on the Adriatic coast is known as the “Slovenian Venice.” Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit to avoid the heat of summer and the cold of winter. Wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, you will discover many Venetian-style Gothic buildings. Tartini Square is the heart of the town, surrounded by historical buildings. Every Wednesday evening, the square hosts an open-air music concert. Enjoy local olive oil and sea salt while listening to the melodious music.

Triglav National Park
Slovenia’s only national park is located in the heart of the Julian Alps. Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia and a national symbol, is located in the park. Summer is the best time for hiking, offering trails of varying difficulty. The Lake Bohinj loop trail is suitable for most hikers. During the winter, the area transforms into a popular ski destination. The rapid turquoise waters and steep canyons of the Soča River valley are a paradise for extreme sports enthusiasts.

Bled Castle
Bled Castle, perched on a cliff, is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. The views of Lake Bled from the castle are spectacular. The castle houses a museum showcasing local history and culture. Every summer, the castle hosts medieval knight shows, recreating scenes from medieval life. The castle restaurant offers traditional Kranjska sausage and local Potica cake. Enjoy the meals while gazing at the panoramic view.

Ljubljana Old Town
Slovenia’s capital city, Ljubljana, is a blend of Baroque and Art Nouveau styles. The old town is best explored on foot, with spring and autumn being the most pleasant seasons. Must-see sights include the Triple Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, and the Prešeren Square. Every Friday afternoon, the Central Market along the river hosts an “Open Kitchen” event, featuring cuisines from all over the world. Take the funicular up to Castle Hill, and visit Ljubljana Castle, which also offers panoramic views of the old town.

Slovenia is located in South Central Europe, bordered by Austria to the north, Italy to the west, Croatia to the south, and Hungary to the east. Its population is approximately 2.1 million. Although Slovenia spans just 20,300 square kilometers, which is slightly smaller than Hainan Island, it is the only country in the world with “love” in its name.
