Norwegian Crown Prince’s Stepson Arrested for Rape: A Recurring Offender?

Recently, the Norwegian royal family must be feeling quite troubled due to legal news involving someone very close to the royal family.

The person in question is actually a repeat offender, none other than Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship, and the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon.

In August of this year, 27-year-old Marius was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend and was detained for over 30 hours. When the police arrived at the scene, some items in the apartment had been smashed, and a knife was found embedded in the wall of his girlfriend’s bedroom. She was also hospitalized for her injuries.

Subsequently, one of Marius’s ex-girlfriends posted online that she had experienced both psychological and physical violence during their relationship, proving he was not a first-time offender.

A week after the incident, Marius issued a statement through his lawyer, apologizing to his girlfriend, admitting that he had caused harm and damaged property while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. He explained that he suffers from “several mental illnesses” and has been “struggling with substance abuse,” currently in rehabilitation.

At the same time, Marius expressed regret to his family for the impact his actions had on them.

On the surface, it seems that Marius has a good attitude toward admitting his mistakes, even apologizing for causing trouble to his family. However, in reality, he says one thing and does another, showing no signs of learning from his mistakes.

Just a month later, in September, he was arrested again for violating a restraining order. The police said he was caught sitting in the same car as the victim from the August incident, breaching the order meant to protect her.

Despite being arrested twice, Marius still did not show any restraint, and this week he was involved in an even more serious matter.

On Monday night, he was arrested for the third time, this time on suspicion of rape.

According to the Norwegian police, Marius is accused of having sexual relations with a person “who was unconscious or unable to resist for other reasons.” The police revealed that this case does not involve sexual intercourse because “the victim was unable to resist this act.”

The media reported that the victim was a woman in her 20s whom Marius had met on the day of the incident; they were not in a romantic relationship.

Marius, who was arrested, denied the rape charge. However, even if he did not commit the rape, he faces a series of charges for other offenses against four other victims (three female, one male), including the aforementioned domestic violence and violation of the restraining order, as well as a charge of driving without a license.

Currently, the Norwegian royal family has declined to comment on Marius’s latest arrest.

Although Marius does not have a royal title and does not have to fulfill royal duties, his constant trouble-making is a real headache. Netizens, seeing him “three strikes and out” with increasingly serious crimes, are also at a loss for words.

“He always looks like he belongs in Slytherin.”

Comment from Daily Mail

“This young man had every opportunity to become a good person. Crown Prince Haakon and his family warmly accepted him and liked him. Sure, he doesn’t have a royal title, but he was still loved by people because of it. However, he turned out to be rebellious, self-righteous, and vulgar. What a waste of resources.”

Comment from Daily Mail

“He’s just a spoiled kid, using his family to get what he wants and thinking he won’t face any consequences. He needs to go to prison.”

Comment from Daily Mail

“I hope justice will prevail. Your status doesn’t give you the right to be above the law or to have everything you want.”

Unfortunately, Marius’s mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been unwell recently.

As early as 2018, she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that worsens over time. Doctors have been monitoring her condition, and thankfully, her disease has progressed slowly, not posing a significant threat yet.

In late October, the Norwegian royal family announced that Mette-Marit would need some time to rest due to health issues. She experienced side effects from medication used to treat her chronic lung disease, expecting to rest for a week, with official engagements canceled or postponed.

After resting, Mette-Marit’s health had recovered somewhat. On Sunday evening, she resumed work, attending the 50th anniversary concert of Kirkelig Kulturverksted, looking radiant in a blue floral dress.

However, the next day, her eldest son caused such a big scandal, being arrested once again, adding to Mette-Marit’s troubles.

If these charges are upheld, Marius might go from being a prince to a prisoner. It seems the children of European royalty are becoming less reliable with each generation…
