On August 19, 1980, the world witnessed a shocking air disaster. That afternoon, Flight 163, after passing all pre-flight checks, was ready to take off with its joyful passengers on board.
The plane taxied smoothly and ascended into the blue sky, with harmony and joy filling the cabin. However, this calm was soon shattered. Just six minutes after takeoff, while still climbing, the fire alarm suddenly lit up.
The crew reacted swiftly, discovering a fire in the cargo hold, and immediately activated the fire suppression system. Unfortunately, multiple fire extinguishers failed to put out the fire, and the flames continued to spread.
For the safety of the passengers and crew, the captain made the decisive decision to return to the airport and notified ground staff to prepare for rescue. A few minutes later, the smoke-engulfed Flight 163 made a stable landing at Riyadh Airport.
However, what was puzzling was that after landing, the captain took no braking measures, did not pull the brake lever, nor did he immediately open the cabin door or shut down the plane’s engines. The plane seemed to be under some mysterious control, continuing to taxi forward.
At this point, the airport’s rescue teams and equipment were ready, just waiting for the plane to stop and the doors to open to commence firefighting and rescue operations.
After about 2 minutes and 40 seconds, the plane finally came to a stop, but the engines were still running, preventing rescue personnel from approaching. Time passed slowly, and after a long 3 minutes and 15 seconds, all the engines on the plane finally stopped.
Seeing this, rescue personnel immediately rushed to the aircraft to open the doors and save lives. However, the doors were severely deformed and could not be opened.
It took 23 minutes for the rescue team to finally open the cabin door, but the scene inside was heartbreaking; the top of the plane had been burnt through, and near the door, there were piles of passenger bodies. All aboard the flight had tragically perished.
This ghostly incident was full of mystery and eeriness, with the bizarre deaths of the passengers and crew sending shivers down spines.
The incident raised questions: If the people on board had already died in the air, how could the plane land safely? And if anyone was still alive, why did no one disembark?
It turns out that when the plane landed at Riyadh Airport, the fire and smoke had already rapidly spread to the cabin.
Onboard Flight 163, the crew failed to act quickly to calm the passengers, leading to chaos in the cabin.
Passengers crowded into the front half of the cabin, where there was less smoke, desperately banging on the doors trying to escape. If the plane had stopped immediately and the doors had been opened promptly, everyone on board might have survived.
However, tragically, the captain did not choose to evacuate the passengers but followed the previous emergency procedures, keeping all passengers on board Flight 163.
This erroneous decision ultimately led to the tragedy. By the time the captain realized the problem, shut down the engines, and tried to open the door, it was too late.
Due to the intense fire, the door-opening mechanism was completely damaged, rendering them helpless even though the door was within reach.
As the fire continued to spread, smoke quickly filled the entire cabin, trapping the passengers in the small space with no chance of escape.
All passengers and crew members on the plane perished from inhaling too much hot, thick smoke.
