Nintendo Switch 2 Is Coming! Huge Screen, New Joy-Cons & Mind-Blowing Features!

Nintendo fans, get ready! The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to launch in June 2024. According to recent leaks, Nintendo has scheduled a Nintendo Direct event on April 2, where the new console is expected to make its official debut.

However, sources suggest that retailers have no concrete information about the launch plans, fueling further speculation about its release date.

Major Upgrades in the Nintendo Switch 2

Bigger Screen, Enhanced Display

Leaked reports indicate that the Switch 2 will feature an 8-inch screen, making it significantly larger than previous models:

  • Switch Lite – 5.5 inches
  • Switch OLED – 7 inches

This means the Switch 2’s screen size is approximately 29% larger than the original model, promising a more immersive visual experience.

Revolutionary Joy-Con Controller Redesign

A teaser video suggests that the Joy-Con controllers will undergo major design changes:

  • Larger size for a more comfortable grip
  • Magnetic attachment system instead of traditional slide-in rails
  • Optical sensors on the sides, possibly for motion tracking or touchpad-like functionality
  • New docking accessories to support unique control features

Additionally, the back of the Joy-Con includes a trigger-like release button. When pressed, a small cylinder retracts, helping to detach the controller effortlessly.

Hall Effect Joysticks – No More Drift?

One of the most exciting rumored upgrades is the use of a Hall effect sensor joystick. Unlike traditional joysticks that wear out over time, leading to the infamous Joy-Con drift issue, Hall effect sensors use magnetic fields instead of physical contact, ensuring greater longevity and precision.

If true, this would be a major improvement for Nintendo, finally addressing one of the biggest complaints about Switch controllers.

New Patent Suggests an Innovative Reversible Design

Nintendo has filed a patent that describes a unique upside-down usability feature. The patent suggests that players can insert Joy-Cons in reverse, and the console will automatically rotate the display 180 degrees.

This means players can flip the console and use it from either direction, allowing the headphone jack to be positioned on the top or bottom based on personal preference.

While the practical benefits of this feature remain unclear, it offers added flexibility for different play styles.

Backward Compatibility: Can You Play Old Switch Games?

A major question among fans is whether Switch 2 will support older Switch games. Reports suggest that backward compatibility will be available, but not all existing titles will be fully supported.

Nintendo is expected to clarify this during the April Direct event, possibly unveiling a list of compatible games that will run on the new hardware.

Possible Release Date and Industry Speculation

While June 2024 is the rumored launch timeframe, third-party publisher Nacon stated in their Q3 2024 financial report that Switch 2 could release between April and September 2025.

With conflicting reports, Nintendo fans will need to stay tuned for official confirmation.
