While places like Kota Kinabalu and Semporna are popular travel spots in Sabah, I find myself drawn to the lesser-known gem of Kudat. It’s like a hidden treasure — less crowded, more beautiful, and with prices that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. Here, you’ll be surrounded by coconut trees, white sandy beaches, local culture, and unforgettable sunsets 🌅.
Nestled in the northern tip of Sabah, Malaysia, Kudat offers a stunning sunset that rivals even Kota Kinabalu’s. You can witness the fleeting beauty of the blue tears phenomenon, or gaze at the stars as they light up the night sky…

Must-Visit Spots in Kudat
1. Tip of Borneo
The “End of Borneo” is a must-see — think iconic lighthouses perched on cliffs with sweeping views of the sea. It’s especially romantic at sunset! Tip: Light-colored dresses make for beautiful photos, but be sure to bring a jacket as it gets windy in the evening.
2. Bak Bak Beach
A glass-clear sea and pristine white sands await you here. It’s like having an entire beach to yourself! Snorkeling in the area will let you swim alongside small fish 🐠.
3. Rungus Longhouse
Visit the traditional homes of the Rungus people, a Sabah indigenous group. You can try your hand at weaving bamboo crafts, enjoy some local rice wine (Tapai), and even join in a traditional dance 💃 — an experience not to be missed!
4. Kudat Night Market
A must-try here includes coconut pudding (Kuih Cincin), grilled tiger prawns, and satay meat skewers. A hearty meal will only cost you about 15 MYR!
