Cats are quirky little creatures, and if you haven’t realized this yet, it’s only a matter of time! Some of their behaviors can be downright puzzling, especially for first-time cat owners. Observing unusual actions might make you worry, but many of these behaviors are entirely normal.
Dr. Allyson Jacobi, a veterinarian at the Animal Medical Clinic of Merle Hay in Des Moines, Iowa, breaks down three funny cat behaviors that might seem odd but are nothing to be concerned about.
Zoomies: Sudden Bursts of Energy

If your cat suddenly dashes around your home at top speed, they’re having the infamous “zoomies.”
“Zoomies are spontaneous bursts of activity that often occur after a long nap, a meal, or even a litter box visit,” says Jacobi. “Just like dogs, cats can get randomly excited—sit back and enjoy the show!”
Zoomies are common in many cats and can be especially entertaining if another pet joins in for a playful chase.
Loafing: The Cozy Cat Position

Have you noticed your cat sitting with their paws tucked neatly under their body, looking like a little loaf of bread? This adorable pose is called loafing.
“There’s a common belief that cats loaf when they’re sick,” Jacobi explains. “This can depend on your cat’s individual habits. If you notice changes in appetite or energy, consult a veterinarian.”
Most of the time, loafing is simply a comfortable resting position. There’s no need to worry unless it’s accompanied by other behavioral changes.
Chirping: Tiny Noises of Joy

Some cats are more vocal and make little sounds known as chirping or chattering, often when excited or watching birds. These noises are their way of expressing happiness.
“Chirping is marked by small mouth movements or sounds when a cat is thrilled,” Jacobi says. “It can happen when they watch birds, anticipate mealtime, or prepare to play.”
Chirping vs. Teeth Grinding
It’s important to differentiate chirping from teeth grinding, which could signal dental problems. If you’re unsure what sound your cat is making, your veterinarian can help. Not all cats chirp, but if yours does, it’s a clear sign of excitement or joy.
Tips for Cat Owners
Embrace your cat’s amusing behaviors! Zoomies, loafing, and chirping are natural ways cats express energy, comfort, and happiness. Observing these actions can deepen your bond and make living with your furry friend even more delightful.
