Hidden high above the valleys near Verona, the breathtaking Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona seems almost suspended between sky and earth. Perched at 775 meters above sea level, this small yet powerful sanctuary has quietly watched over the mountains since the 16th century.

Despite its modest size, the church carries a deep sense of peace and mystery. Its name, inspired by the “crown” of Virgin Mary, symbolizes divine grace and spiritual glory.
A Legend Born from Light and Faith
The origins of this sanctuary are rooted in a story that feels almost mythical.
According to legend, a sacred statue of the Pietà was once kept on the island of Rhodes. During the Ottoman invasion in 1522, it is said that angels carried the statue across the sea to protect it, placing it safely within the cliffs of Monte Baldo.

Locals spoke of a dazzling light shining through the gorge, accompanied by the sound of angelic voices echoing from the rock walls. Drawn by curiosity and faith, villagers climbed down with ropes to witness the miracle.
Moved by what they found, they built a small chapel at the very spot where the statue appeared—marking the beginning of its history as a sacred pilgrimage site.
A Pilgrimage of Devotion and Endurance
Even before the legend spread, this area had been visited by believers as early as the 11th and 12th centuries. But after the miraculous story, the sanctuary gained widespread fame.
Reaching it, however, was no easy task.

The Long Climb to Faith
In the past, pilgrims had to climb an astonishing 1,614 steps carved into the rock to reach the church. Along the way, a bridge known as Ponte sul Tiglio was built to make the journey slightly safer.
For many, the physical challenge was part of the spiritual experience—a test of devotion and perseverance.

Because of its remote and difficult access, the sanctuary also attracted hermits seeking solitude. They would navigate narrow mountain paths and squeeze through rocky passages, embracing hardship as a form of religious practice.
A Place of Silence, Beauty, and Reflection
Today, although reaching the sanctuary is far easier than in the past, its sense of isolation remains. Suspended on the cliffside, far from the noise of modern life, it continues to draw thousands of visitors and pilgrims each year.

Whether you come for spiritual reflection or simply to admire the dramatic landscape, Sanctuary of Madonna della Corona offers something rare—a moment of stillness, where nature and faith meet in perfect harmony.
It’s not just a destination—it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
