Lumiere Clerget is a disheartened architect who, regardless of designing lovely houses for others, struggles to discover a place he can name his personal. Sooner or later, he receives a name from his actual property agent who has miraculously discovered him an inexpensive itemizing in Paris.
The home, with its peculiar options like an unusually low staircase handrail, intrigues Lumiere. He discovers that the home belongs to Peter Waltzer, a rich man dwelling in a Swiss nursing house, and that he was “chosen” as a result of he’s an architect.
Lumiere visits Peter in Switzerland, the place he encounters extra architectural oddities — trumpet-shaped corridors and secret doorways that appear wildly impractical at first look. Peter reveals that these peculiarities are half of a bigger puzzle left by his father, Francois, the architect of the nursing house. Peter asks Lumiere to assist unravel the thriller embedded inside the buildings, setting him on a path that bridges the previous and current, and the late architect’s love story.
Acclaimed architect Baek Hee-sung, reflecting on his eight-year residency in Paris, writes that at any time when he encountered a good looking home, he would depart a notice within the mailbox studying, “From an architect who needs to listen to the story of your home.”
Impressed by these serendipitous invites and the ensuing interviews with Parisian householders, Baek wrote an essay in 2015, which later advanced into this novel that intertwines private discovery with architectural marvels.
Baek mentioned he realized that architects create imperfect areas, and the residents who fill them with reminiscences and love full the architectural imaginative and prescient.
