An Unusual Visitor in Northern Waters
Whales are huge and mysterious creatures that live in the open ocean. Most people rarely see them in the wild.
Recently, however, people across Germany have been following the story of a single humpback whale almost every day. The situation is serious, and it has drawn widespread concern.
The whale is a young individual named Timmy. It is about 12 to 15 meters long. 
First Sighting and Early Rescue
Timmy was first seen on March 3 near Wismar. It had become tangled in a fishing net after entering the harbor area.
There are different theories about why whales enter coastal waters. Some believe Timmy was chasing schools of herring and lost its direction. Others think it may have been a migrating male that became disoriented.
Whatever the cause, Timmy clearly needed help. A marine rescue team arrived quickly and removed the net from its body.
At that moment, rescuers felt relieved. They believed the danger had passed. They did not know this was only the beginning of a long and difficult situation.
First Stranding on the Sandbank
On March 23, Timmy was seen again. Guests at a nearby hotel heard unusual sounds and discovered the whale stranded on a sandbank.
The water was very shallow, only one to two meters deep. Timmy could not swim freely.
A large rescue operation began immediately. Firefighters, marine biologists, and environmental groups all joined the effort.
Complex Rescue Operations
Rescuing a stranded whale is extremely difficult. Direct physical force can injure the animal and cause severe stress.
Instead, rescuers tried to help Timmy escape on its own.
Some teams used boats to create artificial waves. The goal was to help the whale float back into deeper water.
Other teams dug a channel in the sand. This channel was meant to guide Timmy toward the sea.
During this time, Timmy remained trapped. It could not move freely and could not feed.
Experts noted that humpback whales can survive for weeks without food, so its condition was still stable at that stage.
A Brief Moment of Hope
After several days of work, the tide rose during the early hours of March 27.
With the help of the dug channel, Timmy finally managed to swim back into deeper water.
By the next morning, the sandbank was empty. The rescue teams felt relieved. They believed the situation was resolved.
A Sudden and Unexpected Return
The relief did not last long.
Less than two days later, on March 28, Timmy stranded again about 40 kilometers away.
It briefly freed itself during a nighttime high tide. However, it stranded again the next day in a nearby shallow area.
This time, the situation was far worse. Timmy appeared exhausted and weak.
Severe Decline in Condition
Observers noticed worrying changes. Large areas of skin were peeling. The whale’s breathing had slowed.
Rescue teams approached by boat and tried to attract its attention by splashing water.
Timmy barely responded. It lay still in about two meters of water and showed no energy to move.
Experts explained that repeated strandings had severely weakened the whale. Its immune system was under heavy stress.
Its condition was compared to a human suffering from a strong illness, unable to perform physical activity.
Environmental Challenges in the Baltic Sea
Another major problem is the environment of the Baltic Sea. The water has low salinity compared to the open ocean.
This has caused serious skin damage, including infections and tissue breakdown.
In normal ocean conditions such as the Atlantic Ocean, higher salt levels help reduce harmful bacteria and support healing.
But in the Baltic Sea, the condition continues to worsen. If Timmy remains stranded, the infection could become life threatening.
A Race Against Time
Rescuers now face a very difficult situation. Timmy is extremely weak. At the same time, it must travel through a long and narrow passage to reach the open ocean.
Experts say the chances of success are low.
Still, no one is giving up. Rescue teams continue to dig channels and create waves. Escort boats are also being prepared to guide Timmy toward deeper waters if it escapes again.
Ongoing Efforts and Uncertain Future
Many people have gathered at a distance to watch the rescue work. The story has gained attention across Germany and beyond.
Another high tide is expected soon. Rescuers may attempt to gently guide Timmy using a boat, but this plan is still under discussion.
Authorities have confirmed that euthanasia is not being considered. The rescue effort will continue for as long as possible.
For now, Timmy remains stranded.
